CHAPTER 7

Home Sweet Home

The next morning, I woke up early and, despite the jet lag, couldn’t get back to sleep. There were too many thoughts bouncing around inside my head, so I decided to check out the gym. It had been a long time for me to have gone without working out, and the rich Scottish food that I’d been enjoying over the last week certainly wasn’t helping.

I let myself out of the apartment quietly, making sure that I had my access card key with me, and headed down the hallway. All was quiet in the living quarters of the New York HQ of the Obsidian Brotherhood; if the rest of the group had gotten back from the airport during the night, there was no indication. At the end of the corridor, I opened the frosted doors, and what I found there was more than a pleasant surprise.

If memory served, Candace described the palatial exercise facility that I was now standing in as “basic”, but it was definitely anything but!

The room was large and bright, and filled with all manner of exercise machines. Besides the excellent distribution of free weights, there were a number resistance machines, ellipticals, rowing machines, stationary bicycles, and tread mills. There was also a separate area with change rooms, showers, a hot tub, and a sauna. I was also impressed to find that the facility even boasted a small lap swimming exercise pool.

Since I had the place to myself, and no clothing save for that which I was wearing thanks to the theft of our luggage, I stripped down to my boxers, and took a closer look at my choice of exercise equipment. Most of the machines were arranged facing a wall that was dominated by a very large, flat screen television. Once I’d found the remote for it, I turned TV on, and started flipping through the selection of channels as I stepped up on one of the tread mills.

After about twenty minutes, I had given up on finding something to watch on television. I was purposefully avoiding the news, since what I had seen of it had been mostly centered on rehashing what little was known about the emergence of the new Flaming Knight. I was quickly growing tired of how the media experts were over-analyzing rumour and innuendo, so decided to avoid it all together, assuming that Candace and her PR team would tell me what, if anything, I needed to know.

Instead, I found a channel that played a soundtrack appropriate to working out. The music was carried to a number of speakers strategically placed around the room, and made the hour and a half I spent in the exercise facility zip right by.

After my workout, I grabbed a shower in the change rooms, and then went back to the apartment where I found Dirk and Erin in the kitchen. Dirk was cooking one of his world-famous omelettes (he called it world-famous because, apparently, he’d once served it to a couple of Germans
